The maximum fitness level achievable by a cyclist can only be achieved for a short period i.e. you train to 'peak' during the race season. The key to building a peak is to plan the year's training carefully, peaking volume early then trading off volume against intensity later, to produce the desired fitness peak for an event(s). More than one peak can be achieved in a season's racing.
