The only effective analytic method to measure performance is to measure output power verses heartrate. The absolute values are less important than the relative changes between tests. If you are getting fitter then the power generated for a given heart rate will be higher. Without regular testing you don't know how effective the training programme is and will be unable to tailor the programme throughout the season to match your response.
