So after four straight days on the trail, we headed back north to Golden to do laundry and resupply. On Thursday Cynthia joined us for a trip up to a local ride in Golden Gate State Park on the Burro and Mountain Lion trails. Conditions were beautiful with stunning blue skies and fall colours nearing their peak.
The technical trails were welcome by Ben, who was getting sick off all this buff, flowy singletrack that I've grown to love. Now it was game on!

Then there was the loooong drive to Santa Fe on Friday morning. Nearly seven hours in the car will drive just about anyone mad, but it also brings out the urge to ride. We found out we were lucky and missed the cluster-F* of a group ride organized for Friday and fended for ourselves. Via Cynthia's global network of the local lowdown, we hit some in-town riding called the Dale Ball trails. Nothing remarkable, but lots of fun for in-town riding within 10 minute's drive of the motel.

Ben burning off some of the stir-craziness in his legs by caining the descent. More pics here.

After a great dinner, good company, and of course, great margaritas in Santa Fe, we headed north to the city that invented the atomic bomb, Los Alamos. Little doubt that the riding there was the total bomb! While Cynthia went downhilling at the ski area, Tom, Mark, Ben, Glen and I explored a newly opened trail called Guaje Canyon. Epic. I know it's overused, but it fits the bill. An insane drop in, sketchy route that entailed more crushed down grasses than dirt trail, and a feeling of total isolation made it the most epic ride of the season for me. What an adventure.

Ben taking one of many steep, sketchy switchbacks on the drop into the canyon.

WTF? Over 2.5 hours into the ride you don't expect to see something like this. I sure was glad for my mates. Getting down this diversion structure was a lot easier when we could pass the bikes down rather than having to try to carry them down the ladder.

A bit tricky, that.

More pics here.
