Possibly off to Lee Quarry one Sunday in March for a days riding. Travel up Sat. night and stay somewhere on route, possibly close to Bacup. Any recommendations for a MTB friendly B&B?
Thanks for any info. -------------------- There do appear to be some hills south of the Trent...

i,ll start with,.......i don,t want to put you off, but,...
we went up expecting a bit of technical stuff and downhill, so went on the nomad, it ended up just a long slog round tbh,.. i was,nt muddy or ought but the wheels seemed to stick to the floor,, probably would have enjoed it in the summer on a xc bike, as it was a decent ride round, but in our view it was,nt worth the 1.75 hrs or so travelling,.. if you do go , try a get hold of a route map before hand as we found it a bit hit and miss, luckily, we bumped in a trail ranger who kindly took us up to the crag quarry loop, which is an add on to lee quarry,.. |

yes,
it,s balancing the travelling time, up against the ride reward, see if you can get more opinions of the course, but for that amount of travelling time , imo it,s not, probably be worth stopping on route to the lakes, so you can tick it off the list, for instance.. i,ve been on the brownbacks racing website , as they hold regular races at the venue, but no accommodation listing was on it, you could email the organisers for local listings if you are going to pursue it further, |

Lee Quarry can easily be linked to the newer Cragg Quarry but even that is only a 2 to 3 hour ride, but if you want to play on sections or do a couple of full loops than yes it woud be worth the trip north.
You can link it into the very large Mary Towneley Loop for a definatly very full day. Search for both Lee Quarry and Cragg Quarry on Youtube Come up north, it's great. -------------------- ![]() Meaty, Beefy, Big & Bouncy |

Come up north, it's great. I usually go further north and stay well clear of the midlands If we do go, we'll link up with Cragg and session the runs. To be honest for all that mileage I'd rather travel a bit further & make a weekend of it; hit Helvellyn & Three Peaks, or something along those lines. We shall see..... -------------------- There do appear to be some hills south of the Trent...

with regards to Lee Quarry, I remember reports of break-ins to vehicles a couple of years ago.
IF I recall correctly the carpark is away from the riding areas with few comings and goings. What's the layout of the car park, has it changed at all in the last two years? Or was there never an issue? (and I'm going bonkers? Rod -------------------- Every Silver Lining Has a Cloud!
Don't trust government (I'm bitter and twisted over the CROW & NERC BILL) (Mountain biking will be next incidentally) NO, you're OK, I insist YOU go first. ... Told you it couldn't be done! |

You can tell it's a quarry due to the echo
Is there any where near you might be able to park more safely? Rod -------------------- Every Silver Lining Has a Cloud!

I live in Bacup and to be honest the gypsies have not been near Lee Quarry for quite a long time now and even if they do turn up they get moved on now pretty quickly by the local authorities. On a typical weekend there is usually between 20 - 30 vehicles parked on the parking area below the quarry but you could always park about 1/2 mile down the road on the http://www.rosenbowl.co.uk/ car park which is directly on the main road and still easy access to the quarries.
As for accommodationon try http://www.number678.co.uk/index.htm they can supply a lockup for cyclists and is about 2 mile from Lee Quarry. The quarries are fun and there are loads more trails around like someone suggested try the Mary Townley loop which is a 47 mile epic loop of the surrounding areas http://www.nationaltrail.co.uk/Penninebrid...s.asp?PageId=37 Hope this helps. |
