mild winters!

Mild? It's pretty cold at the moment! The odd thing is, I'd prefer for it to be properly cold rather than just this "chilly" faff the UK normally has.

Well, I agree. Nasty conditions just now. But you could go out for a ride. Here on the ups there's a mixture of about 20cm/8" wet snow and mud, well crusted on the surface when frozen and good for nothing.
A clever friend of mine went to the lower areas at the weekend in search for better riding conditions and finally plunged his bike and himself tongue.gif

I hate cleaning the bike, it's waste of time. But muddy tracks belong to our sport.

The Magura HS33? The best rim brake I suppose.

I'm not a hard rider, but the UK in winter is the biggest mud fest ever. With mudguards it's still pretty hellish, without it's not too hard to masquerade as a swamp monster after even the shortest ride!

Hey Everflow, nice to have you on the forum.
To improve your English more you would be best advised to talk mostly to people from Birmingham as we speak the Queens English better than anyone else! wink.gif
You should pop over one weekend for a ride!! agree.gif

Hi Bove!
I know, the real northern accent could be hard to understand...(I will ask my neighbour, who works as a translater and is raised in Worcester)
Well, I do really think about a short visit to England. But not in winter, that's too hard for me in fact (or only sight-seeing without the bike)! I'm not a mud-lover at all. Nevertheless, I am looking for the best and cheapest route for Britain in order to plan a longer weekend in spring.
Is it really true, that in Birmingham the best english is spoken? (Oxford, London..)? blink.gif

Mainly I know Birmingham as the birthplace of Black Sabbath.

LOL - welcome Everflow, I've only just joined the site as got back into a bit of MTB myself, you're lucky being where you are, we visit a certain 23km loop of tarmac in the Eifel mountains 6 - 8 times a year and still my German is very poor, doesn't help that the Ringhaus speaks very good English though...

Best and cheapets route to Britain? We always use the ferry, but beware of the train and bus costs here compared to yourselves - it may be cheaper to fly further up our country depending upon where you want to go/visit. I'd personally recommend driving over (for the freedom and it's not that far from you). Then flying, then by public transport if you must.

Anyway, I'm off to explore the rest of the site, maybe you can improve my English too....

Hi physiogixer!
Thanks for your kind comment!
Why going to the Eifel for only riding 23km? It is said, the Eifel is a rough but nice place to stay over holiday. But I never went over there. How about visiting the Black Forest instead? I'll be your guide off-road or on-road. Let me know, I'm not joking.

Well, when going to Britain, I shall use my own car as it means freedom. We sold several kitchens to Cobham, Surrey, and the costs for the tunnel were amazingly high (for the lorry). But I found out, that the ferry is about 40 quid oneway. Now I'm asking some friends in order to divide the costs... rolleyes.gif (not only) innocent.gif and of course to have more fun!

So if plans are getting more specific, I'll announce here.

Don't worry about speaking English in Germany! Most of us are very pleased when we can practise our poor English to a native speaker, particulary to an Englishman.

Why going to the Eifel for only riding 23km?

Because I get the Touristenfahrten each year for the Nordschleife - most weekends in the summer I can be found chasing Sabine in the Ringtaxi or trying to keep up with the locals in their GT3's...I am usually on 2 wheels though (sometimes 4, but 2 wheels are my speciality).

40 quid one way!!! - it should be cheaper than that, we pay 150 pounds for the Dover - Zebrugge crossing for a car and trailer (a better crossing in my opinion as you have more time to relax on ferry, and it's not so crowded as no foot passengers). I know it's a faster crossing doing it Calais - Dover, but you do save half an hour of road travelling in France on the E40 if you stop at Zebrugge instead of Calais. I think a car is about 70 quid for a return.

No, I did mean English.... tongue.gif tongue.gif tongue.gif

I may take my MTB next time to Germany, some of the forests look good round where the Nurburgring is, when it's shut there isn't that much to do in the area as it's in the middle of no-where.

Anyway, arn't you near the B500 from Baden Baden? I hear it's a beautiful part of the world round there, especially that road. Must be some stunning MTB tracks round that area?

Mike

Very good, Mike! You know the area around here very well! The B500 starts in Baden-Baden and ends in the town where I am living. Formerly I was cruising the B500 with my LeMansII, but now I'm riding with mit MTB on the "Westweg"-Trail nearby. To be honest, one of the the most beautiful parts of the world I know, like you've said. I simply adore it!

Especially for you: here around, the B500 is about 12m wide and some of the curves were built like steep turns. So you could achieve a highspeed of about 200km/h on an average speed of about 160 (you know knee-on-road, protected by cut tyres wink.gif...but surely not me). Illegal, of course, so nowadays the speed limit of 70km/h is controlled strictly!

Cheers
Axel

P.S.: Thanks for your ferry tip!
