MTB Britain _ General Mountain Biking _ Free OS maps

OS mapping data to be made freely available.

Not much detail on OS or BBC.

But The Guardian are claiming credit and say it will be at 1:10k

It's all a bit vague at the moment, but the whole of the UK at 1:25k for free would be nice. pray.gif

Do you mean like http://www.multimap.com/maps/?qs=helvellyn&countryCode=GB#map=54.52796,-3.01592|16|4&dp=os&bd=useful_information&loc=GB:54.53333:-3.01667:17|helvellyn|Helvellyn?

Agreed that's not clear. They say 'Down to 1:10,000' but not 1:25,000 which would be included in 'Down to' in my mind. If it's just the 1:10,000 that's an almost useless scale from a navigation point of view. dry.gif

Well, sort of.
Full screen, like google earth, would be handy.
And http://www.satmap.com/ukstore/index.php?cPath=81_99 for free would be nice too.

The whole UK is already free for 50K and 10K if you can do a little web dev with JavaScript. But the OS is holding back on the 25K stuff because that's what everyone really wants! They also have to make money somehow.

Check out http://openspace.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/openspace/index.html for more info. We're working on some of this for the forum right now! Check my sig link for some demos of full screen maps of my local rides.

Or check out my OpenSpace implementation on all my routes: http://www.mountainbikerides.co.uk/routes/index.htm

A few years ago Multimap used to have the 25K for free (I used to link to it from my routes). They pulled it when Multimap switched to the new interface with the excuse that it wasn't available in vector format (to allow zooming etc).

Well, yes and no.
If National Parks, Forestry Commision land and public RoWs are all maintained by government funded agencies and freely available for anyone to use, doing the same for OS data is not such a radical idea.

I doubt it will stop me going down the wrong trail though innocent.gif
