Sounds like you got the wrong batteries to me.
See below: Brand: UltraFire Model: WF-502B Emitter Brand/Type: SSC Emitter BIN: P7-CSXO Color BIN: White Total Emitters: 1 Battery Configurations: 1 x 18650 / 1 x 17670 rechargeable battery Voltage Input: 2.7~4.2V, 4.2V Max. Switch Type: Clicky/Clickie Switch Location: Tail-cap Modes: 3 Mode Memory: Circuitry Features Mode Memory Mode Arrangement: Hi > Lo > Fast Strobe Circuitry: Digital Regulated 2500mA Current Output Brightness: 900 lumens maximum brightness (manufacturer rated) Runtime: 90 minutes (manufacturer rated) Lens: Coated Glass Lens Reflector: Aluminum Textured/OP Reflector Carrying Clip: Clip Included So the Cree ones will take the smaller CR123A's but the P7 as above will not. -------------------- Get proper instruction www.mountainbikeinstruction.co.uk

So the Cree ones will take the smaller CR123A's but the P7 as above will not. Input voltage tolerance depends more on the driver than the LED. The P7's tend to be direct drive with a resistor so more than 4.2v will fry them, though there's no reason you can't up the value of the resistor and use a higher voltage as from 2 (r?)cr123a's (no particular reason you'd want to do this, but hey). Granted the cree MC-E can be setup 2s2p which will be more efficient than a big resistor and a P7 (powered with 2 lithium rechargeables) but it's much more down to how the innards are setup by the manufacturer, and not the LED used. Don't confused cr123a's (3v nominal, single use, packaging looks like a 'normal' battery) with rcr123a's (3.7v nominal, rechargeable, blue or grey packaging). It's very possible to damage a light designed to run on the CR123A's by using RCR's instead. Hence RCR's are normally referred to as 16340's to keep confusion to a minimum. Basically, make sure to keep your battery voltage within the rated input voltage for the torch you're using, preferably by using the batteries the mfg recommends for you torch! -------------------- "Say something that you know they might attack you for"
