Hi ppl,

Decided to get some mtb shoes after desytroying my everyday trainers going round llandegla recently but I'm not sure what to go for so looking for some advice.

Liking the sound of five tens (considering everyone says there awesome) but not sure which ones to go for:

Five Ten Freerider - Link

Five Ten Baron - Link

Five Ten Maltese Falcon - Link

Impact 2 Low - Link

and am also considering some Vans

Vans Warner - Link

Vans Gravel - Link

There all pretty similar in terms of price. I don't use SPDs.

What do people think?

TIA

I ride in Five Ten's, and as far as I'm concerned, there is no other choice!

Be weary of the Falcons. I only say this because I'm currently wearing Minnaar SPDs (same as Falcon) - but, using as flats. And whilst they've lasted me well (1.5yrs), the blanking SPD 'plug' has been the first thing to wear. The rubber covering the 'plug' is not as deep as the rest of the sole. And this means they now hit on my pedals. I keep meaning to contact Five Ten to see if I can get replacements.
Other than this one niggle, I can't fault them.

The Impact is a great shoe. The waffle sole is much deeper (in pattern) than the Minnaar/Falcon. So much so that you actually (almost) feel clipped in when using with a good set of flats.
The downside of the Impact is that they look a little bit like 'special' orthopaedic shoes.

Cheers for the responses guys and nice one for the heads up on the spd plug bazza, I did wonder about that as it looks like you miss a section of the shoe there for gripping plus as you said it will be the first bit to wear.

I'm definitely heading towards the five tens as these seem a 'no brainer' over the vans. That just leaves me with the:

Five Ten Freerider, Baron or impact.

Think I'm heading towards the freerider in grey, followed closely by the impact then the baron. I'm not sure on how water/mud rsistant the freerider look comparde to the other two though.

More opinions/thoughts are welcome.

Thanks

Have you considered the Shimano AM41?
http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=55371

These are the first and only shoe i've had as far as flats go so i cant compare.
But now i've ridden them for 6 months i get on with em.

They are comfortable on the bike and not too bad to walk in whilst pushing if you have to.

Good coverage in the wet with the flap that covers the laces.
The sole seems to be lasting well too.

Little bit cheaper than what you are looking at as well.

Went to leisure lakes bikes on the weekend and tried on the Impact Low and Baron but unfortunately didn't have the freestyler in, in my size.

The impact was too bulky for me, really liked the Baron they looked cool too. Maybe still slightly bulky but I'm going to head back there next weekend as they said there getting the freerider in so I can compare Freerider to Baron. got a feeling the freerider is gonna win.

@bert - the Shimano's look interesting, thanks for pointing them out. Your making my decision more difficult ha ha. I just wish I could try them on but there isn't anywhere near me that has them.

Will let you know what I go for.

Tell a lie, just seen the AM41s at leisure lake bikes website so will try them on while I'm there, Cheers bert.

510 Freeriders are on offer at CRC for 54.99 so that made my decision for me. Grey/Black pair ordered.

Can't wait to get them and try them out now!
