Hi folks ..broke my tibia and fibula playing rugby last weekend sad.gif - had a op to get the facture secured with a rod and screws...just as the weather is getting better! :x

Anybody done something similar...if so how long before you were back on the bike...I guess it scuppers my chances of doing the transscotland though!

Oh no! That's awful mate. I have no idea but I suspect quite a few months. Not what you want to hear I know but I can't see it being much shorter.

Got any gory photos?

Hi Marv, i have done the same tib in two place fib in one (may 2004), had the rod and screws (7) to hold it, the doc said 3 months but i had a lack of calcium along with a miss set leg (7 deg out of line) so it never set fully until they re broke the fib and reset it (feb 2005) then i was back on the bike in 3 months, they removed the pin in oct 2005 and i did the cape epic april 2006. but then i was 44 too!! good luck i am sure the Uk is better than here!

Get back on the bike (road work) as soon as you can stand the pain. The 'K nail' will hold the bone together nicely as it is inside your tibia (shin bone) excersise will improve blood flow and promote bone growth.

Don't go against the advice of your surgeon/physio but get out as frequently and as early as they will allow.

Mountain Biking will probably have to wait for proper healing as the chances of landing hard on your foot or even leg are quite high. :!:

feel bad for you mate as i broke my tib/fib at the ankle quite a few years ago in a motocross accident, i was in plaster for 3 months but it was almost a year before i could walk comfortably and without limping and it wasnt until i'd had all the pins and plates removed that it was good as new.
Unfortunatley you've just got to be patient but you'll be back on your bike before you know it.

Ive done the mother of all bones the femur 3 or 4 years ago, screw and pin etc. If you dont have a static bike get one asap. an hour a day spinning on that without the risk of crashing is good and plenty of stretches with the aid of small weights to attach to your ankle speeds it up. It took me 5 months to be xc mountain biking...

good luck

Thanks for all your good wishes and advice...the pain has gone down and my knee mobility is improving. smile.gif

Will sort out a trainer to attach to my road bike and get myself spinning again soon.

I 'll update you all on progress.

Seeing those reminds me why I retired from Rugby.

A torn cartilage (meniscus) was bad enough. Looking at those - eeuugh!

That's a break and a half... (well, 2 breaks technically).

All the best for a quick recovery stretcher.gif

Leg does feel weaker, it is still sore. I can bike (only in the saddle) and swim but cannot run. I am aiming to be back on the trails after Xmas with the lough erne triathlon and the 2008 transUK my goals to keep me motivated.

Have also relocated to Northern lreland which hasn't helped but will still be back over regularly next summer for rides...in the meantime is there anyone from North Down or Belfast on the forum!
