Hi Phipsy - Take a look at this topic also http://www.mtbbritain.co.uk/forum/index.ph...8&hl=forest. The MBUK article on the BOB website is worth a read before you head off....

OK - I have the OK from SWMBO to go riding on Saturday.
The weather forecast looks like the OK(ish) weather is going to hold for a few days.

So ...

Would anyone care to join me at Swinley Forest on Saturday? If I do get a response then a time can be arranged to suit. I won't be able to ride for too long (couple of hours) as I feel a bit guilty leaving 'she what who's indoors' holding the baby for too long.

Preferred meet time would be 9:30/10:00
Meet place is the car park at the Lookout

(Edit) - By Saturday I mean 26th January

I'm up for that. Can meet as early as you like - the earlier the better for me as the earlier I get home, the less grief I get :0)

Can pick up anyone needing a lift from Pompey / Southampton on the way up the M27/M3 to Bracknell. Do you know the place well DrBike or will we be exploring as we go?

Bob (et al),

I've been there a few times before but I have to admit that each time I've been I've discovered some new bits of trail. It won't be all exploring as we go - I suggest that we follow a loop that I did last time and then decide what to do from then.

I have to warn you that the pace will be pretty sedate as I've hardly ridden in the past 3 months, but it should be an opportunity to meet at least one other forum member.

Directions
From the M3 come off at junction 3 Bagshot and take the A322 towards Bracknell. After 3 miles or so you'll come to a roundabout, go left (B3430/Nine Mile Ride) and then left at the first lights (the Lookout Discovery Centre).

From the M4 at junction 10 take the A329(M) towards Bracknell. Go past Bracknell following signs for the Lookout Discovery Centre turning right at the above mentioned r/b (I think it's called the Coral Reef roundabout)

Follow the road into the parking area round a right-hand bend, I try to park in the area immediately on the left.

Don't forget to bring at least £1.50. We'll probably ride before the Discovery Centre opens but we can pay once we've ridden. There's little cafe there too for some post ride refreshments.

Regarding the timing - we'll see how many takers there are. I can get there for more or less any time.

For those who intend to come please reply here so I know who to look out for and IM me with your GSM number if you can, I'll IM in reply to give mine.

BTW - If you're running late or have a change of plan be sure to let me know a) so we're not hanging around and cool.gif so we don't give up and ride without you.

Heh, Dr Bike meet Cap'n Slow. I'm never in a rush. Details PM'd, see you tomorrow. I hope no-one's piking out because they expect the others to be stick thin racing whippets on 5K bling machines. I'm happy to be a low-skilled moderately fit pleasure rider on a hardtail who just likes Getting Out There and trying out new places I've never ridden before :-)

How did you guys get on at Swinley today? Was it boggy or not too bad?

I'm off there tomorrow and haven't been for a while. I used to ride there a lot and just wondered how the trails had held up, after what has so far been a rather wet Winter.

Cheers

Well, that was a little gem! It was boggy in parts, but not overly so, but then I like a bit of mud!

Thanks to Andy (DrBike) for a great ride today. My usual rides are straight XC stuff - bridleways, trails and tracks over the South Downs, which I love, but this was something different. We didn't go very far today (under 10 miles) and only saw a bit of it, but the variety there is impressive. Proper swoopy singletrack, challenging rooty, muddy climbs and drops, and some serious jumpy bits which were beyond me. In parts it reminded of the Marin Trail, with its long flowing sections - but minus the rocks and the fire road climb. I had no idea this kind place existed south of London. It's definitely worth a go for anyone darn sarf who hasn't been there, so long as you have a guide who knows the place - it would be too easy to miss the good bits if you just meander around. The official map doesn't show the off-track trails, so is ony good for rough navigation. Google Earth file here.

Don't worry Sinful, the intention is to make this a regular monthly ride and in a way it was good that it was me and Bob as I kinda ploughed round the loop that I devised before and he was able to track it with his GPS. I'm pretty sure that next time we can put an even better ride together (in fact I would mind riding the same loop in reverse - but that'll come in due course).

The next good date for me would be 16th Feb - how's that for you guys?

Although the ride wasn't that long in distance we still rode for 2 hours but things weren't helped by a) the fact that we had to circumnavigate where they're laying a huge pipe through the middle of the forest and cool.gif the muddy sections made it much harder to pick a line.

Both of us were a bit limited for time, but hopefully next time I'll be able to ride a bit longer (but then again I'm so out of condition I was happy to ride for just 2 hours).

16th of Feb probably isn't ideal for me. The weekend of the 9th and 10th has options though. I wish I could just say name a date and I'll be there but the trouble is that because I'm 95% of the time down in Southampton, things are a little more awkward. banghead.gif

Speak with Bob, he may be able to give you a lift as he lives down that way.

The 16th Feb is better as the wife's sister will be visiting so I get to play whilst they go shopping and do "baby" things. I'll have to check what plans have already been made for the weekend of 9th/10th.

16th Feb good for me ATM. 9/10 Feb also possible but might require a significant amount of SWMBO-grovelling.

More than happy to do lifts from Soton area and anywhere en route up the M3.

If it's really difficult, don't plan it around me, there will be plenty of other opportunities - I'll be popping up every two weeks or so again very soon. Appreciate the thought though.

Bob, my bike's actually at home just outside Bracknell - so at some point in the future I could possibly take you up on a lift from around there, if you'd be so kind. innocent.gif

Likewise ...

I've done a suitable amount of SWMBO grovelling and have the requisite day pass for Saturday 16th Feb.

Depending on the turnout ... if we get a reasonable sized group we'll do the XC loop that Bob and I rode last weekend or for a smaller number of peeps we can do some trial and error/hunt & peck exploration of trail options/extensions to the current loop.

Do I see any names in the frame? Marcliam? Ash? Phipsy?

I'm hopeful for this one (16th) (will put necessary application form into better half!)

EDIT - I'm OK for the 16th Feb, looking forward to it!! stupidlyhappy.gif (although usual caveat that I may be a bit slow, etc!!!)
