Full Version: Gallery Image Culling
MTB Britain > Other Stuff > Website

I just noticed that one of my galleries (some Cwmcarn uplift pics) has been culled. I presume that this was because there were many similar photos? I posted all these as I thought the people featured would all like to see the photos of themselves so that's kinda why I broke the guidelines.

Fair enough if you want to free up space and all that and I'm not that arsed as I have my own site where I can publish what I want.... but wouldn't it be a good idea when this happens to inform the "offender" (PM/email) what has happened and why. This might even prevent folk from "offending" again if they understand the reasoning?

Also on a technical note when you do it it causes broken links. e.g. it fecks up the thumbnail for the gallery in "My Albums" cuz the picture is gone.

And on another technical note it fecks up the gallery so it has multiple (blank) pages and says " Showing 3 of 15" when there are only 3 images now in the gallery

Heh heh, that's some cull going on there! I like that on Jo's CC bridge picture Gareth's first comment makes absolutely no sense at all now.

heh heh - it happend to some of my pics so I stopped putting them in the gallery and posted links to my flickr instead.

I usually leave multiple pics for about a month before deleting some. From my point of view it's not so much to save space but to stop the 'same' photo appearing in the random gallery all the time.

Image numbers should be re-synched now. A couple of members have noted that image counts were wrong after an image cull - this should now be fixed permanently, I hope.

That would be nice if the mod doing the culling had the time to PM everyone as they went along. What do the mods think?

It's not really an 'offence' to post lots of pictures in the gallery that will later likely get culled, they're only really relevant at the time of posting.
It would be better for such repetetive shots to be attached to a posting on the rides thread with the best few saved for the Gallery however.

Sorry it causes some technical problems with albums etc. we're not actually short of space at all and I would like to be able to mark the repetetive and 'boring' pictures as for the posters album only. I'm looking forward to the day we can do this in the software we have but until then the mods decided they would rather have them culled and I went with the group decision. innocent.gif

Pass.

I havnt got time to write mtbtechniques never mind send a PM every time someone posts a picture of someone leaning on a gate, the umpteenth photo of their bike in the main gallery or a sticker found on the underside of their bike. All of which can be found in the first two pages of the gallery atm.
Gareth
There you have it, if you post sub-mediocre shots in the Gallery they will get culled and you won't get a PM. innocent.gif

Messaging someone when a file is deleted could be automated? (Sorry bobsola - I know you've probably got enough on your plate!)

I thought images had to have a minimum ranking to get in the random thing? Or was that somewhere else?

That's kind of how I would like it, I have no need of deleting members 'personal' gallery pictures, we have loads of staorage room but we just can't find a way to get the gallery to work like this with our software as yet.

The auto-PM after an image cull is a good idea. I'll look into that once the maps stuff is done.

The random imaging is just that - random! We could look at using rankings as a source for the home page images, but it's potentially open to abuse by idiots stuffing the figures in collusion with other idiots and would therefore take quite a lot of work for not much benefit.

just an idea

why not give someone the power to be the gallery mod and delete unsuitable pictures when necessary and send a pm giving reasons why ?

Sounds good to me.

Erm, that would be what Doug has been doing for the last year or two... Except for the PM part... wink.gif

I used to send out a PM religiously but after a while I got fed up with sending the same 'doesnt fall within the gallery rules set out on the gallery main page [quote rules]' message. I got to the point where I thought that if people cant be bothered to read the rules I can't be bothered to send a PM. I have no problem if someone a little less jaded wants to take over.

Special Request:

Having been paying more attention to the gallery in recent times can I ask that pictures of people with advanced / impeccable riding skills be deleted as they are beginning to make me feel extremely inadequate! tongue.gif

I get back from a ride just feeling thankful to have stayed on the bike. I open up the forum and i'm presented with a picture of someone 10ft in the air dropping off some impressive north shore.
