Up grade advice

Hello all I have a gt avalanche 3.0 ( 2011 ). Think of upgrading some bits but don’t know what to do first.( Cant afford a new bike ). Have got £200 If the boiler dose not cost to much to fix.

Looking at forks, rims and hub. I mainly do xc ride( but getting brave taking small jumps). Only been MTB for 8 mouth and love it, even when I get lost.

Rims and hub don't have a clue. The rims on the GT look like plastic to me
Not to keen on buying forks on eBay.

What forks does it currently have? Do you currently have disc brakes?

Your best bank-for-buck upgrades are forks and hydraulic disc brakes. Rims and hubs won't make any difference at the moment as you'll not be spending enough on them to actually make a difference you could notice other than visual.

For brakes, Rosebikes in Germany seem to be offering very crazy prices on shimano stuff:

That's £23 for a complete from brake although you'd need to buy a disc also. BUT, before you dive in you'd need to check that your hubs can take discs.

It has the suntour xcm forks with Tektro Aquila Mechanical Disc Brake front and back.

£50 could have hydraulic brakes front and back. Thanks nice find agree.gif

Just been looking at the brake (Front wheel brake: left brake lever BL-M445, brake calliper BR-M446, cable length 1000 mm) It could be, but is the front brake on the right.

Yes, on your bike the front brake lever should be on the right but in Europe they do it the other way around. Luckily the Shimanos can be swapped very easily without requiring a re-bleed.

XCM isn't the best fork going, there's the 2011 version of the RS fork in stock for £150:

probably no difference of merit between the two years to be honest. Merlin have the 2012 available for £120 though I think:
