Our Expert Buying Guide

What Features Should I Check For?

Before selecting one of the many forks out there, read our reviews and ensure that it is compatible with your bike. You will also need to take your personal requirements into consideration. There isn’t a one size fits all when it comes to MTB components.

Some of the features that you will need to look out for include:

  • Wheel Size
  • Fork Steerer
  • Axle Types
  • Disc Mounts

For more information on the said features, read on, as we help you pick the best suspension forks with this easy-to-follow guide.

Wheel Size

General mountain bike wheel sizes are 26in, 27.5in and 29in. It’s important not to mix and match when picking your forks. You will need to confirm that the forks you buy can be matched with the wheel size that you have.

To find out what size wheel you have, check the specification of the bike you bought or simply look on the tyre, it should be listed there.

Fork Steerer

Not all bikes require a steerer, you will need to look into this before purchasing your parts. Generally though, you will be working with the tapered standard steerer. Find out what you are working with, before committing to any purchases.

Axle Types

A lot of new edition bikes come with a 15mm bolt-through axle. Older bikes have 9mm quick release. This is usually something that is overlooked, don’t be caught out and do your due diligence with sizes.

Disc Mounts

It’s another case of the modern bikes having a standard component or size. Where the older bikes are known for using I.S. mount and many of the modern models showcase post mount disc brake callipers.

Travel

A hotly discussed topic in the MTB world- the amount of travel. Much of it relies on preference. What type of travel do you enjoy? A short or long fork travel?

This is where things get important. It’s imperative that you never combine a fork with shorter travel. Check what measurements the fork is designed for, and stick to it. When you go outside of the parameters, the handling can become tricky and you may damage your bike.

Things You Need to Know When Buying Fork Suspension

Other things you should be aware of when it comes to fork suspension is, the following:

  • Travel- If you’re experienced, then you’re already aware of travel and it’s importance. For those that are new to MTB, this is a phrase you are constantly hearing. It is the distance that the fork moves up and down when riding. The longer, the smoother, for the most part. It is also the heavier too, it is key to find a balacne that works for you and that is attuned to your bike.
  • Control- Longer travel combats the vibrations and bumps. Too long can concede control, that is why you should test ride and find out what works for you. A happy medium is sometimes the best answer.
  • Strength- Lightweight helps improve performance, but you need a good strength to weight ratio. If you are mountain biking, you need a resilient component, up to the task of jumps, landings and consistent bumps.
  • Weight- If you are all about time, trails and overall performance- you will want a lightweight fork. In-fact you will want lightweight components throughout. A good weight can be anywhere between 1.9kg and 2.5kg.
  • Versatility- Getting the right forks for your bike comes down to the specs that we discussed above. Sometimes you will find forks that have been designed to be versatile and fit well on numerous types of bikes and frames.
  • Ease of Fitting- Fitting forks can be a pain, that is why it is key to write down all the specs and get it right. We highlight some of the forks that we believe are easier to fit. Read on for our top 10 forks that we believe to be easy to fit and worth the time.
  • Price- It goes without saying, you will want something that is in your budget. Make sure you are getting a lot for your money, you will be looking to pay anywhere from £50-£200 for a good set of forks.

Take hassle out of buying new forks for your mountain bike. With all of the above considered, you can now browse our reviews and check out our top 10 favourite suspension forks.
